In his note to 13th century astrologer Guido Bonatti’s “Liber Astronomiae. Part IV, On Horary, First Part”, astrologer Robert Hand states the following:

… if the chart is not really connected to the question, then the chart is not radical. The question of intention comes up because of the following reasons: 1) The querent’s intention must be clear; he or she must know what he or she wants. 2) The intention must be serious and not merely born out of a wish to test or deceive the astrologer. 3) The intention must be the querent’s own. A question cannot be asked under compulsion from another. If not all of these statements are true, then the chart will not be radical, i.e., ‘foundational’, to coin a word.

So ‘radical’ here means ‘foundational’. If you are to build something, you would mind the state of the ground on which your building is going to stand. Your question is the foundation. Clear, serious and your own intention is the prerogative of the validity of the question.

In part 1, I mentioned development over time within a horary chart. However, there is also a ‘here and now’ type of horary. The latter is called ’emplacement’ chart and more focused on ‘being’ than ‘becoming’. You ask for example: are they honest? Not: are they going to be honest?

Your habit

In her new book on horary (“Learning classical horary astrology”), astrologer J. Lee Lehman says about the importance of putting a time limit on the question. Because horary ‘detects’ your habit of not choosing or doing the same habitual things, hence with a time limit, you are propelled to make a conscious choice. Besides, after your question has been answered, what else do you do but make a move based on that answer!

You formulate your question carefully in order to convey your intention and achieve┬áthe ‘radicality’ of your question. The astrologer assigns the quesited (=object of your question) to the right house/s and see how the querent and the quesited are connected. Then, the planets are like protagonists. Assuming your question is about your partner and the 7th house (partner) is in a sign ruled by Venus and Venus is found in the 1st house (you/querent). Your partner is in your house, that is, he/she is keen to be with you!

That much (and much more) is shown through planetary positions and their interactions of the moment. It can be overwhelming at times, but what is revealed is also exactly who you are as a querent. As well as who I am as an astrologer.
